Summer is the absolute BEST time to indulge in some guilt-free, relaxing self-care and catch-up on lectures you might have missed during the busy Spring season!
Our first lecture, "Would the Real Colonel Rodgers Please Stand-up?" by Dr. Robert Selig, is a rebroadcast from Spring 2023. Technical difficulties (entirely user error on our end!) prevented us from recording the original in-person lecture in February 2023. The good news is that now you can watch an updated lecture showing that Colonel John Rodgers was, in fact, a real bona fide colonel in the Harford County Militia during the Revolutionary War. Dr. Selig explores John Rodgers' activities during the War and the role the tavern and the Lower Susquehanna Ferry played during the March to Yorktown in 1781.
From the Revolutionary War, we turn to Jenny Masur's lecture "How to Research and Spread the Word About Unsung Heroes of the Underground Railroad." Maryland was the starting point of many unsung heroes of the Underground Railroad. Freedom seekers embarked on the perilous journey from slavery to freedom in whatever way they could. They used ruses and found allies to elude slave catchers but lived in constant fear until they obtained their freedom papers. In their adventures, these freedom seekers used initiative, determination and courage. Jenny shares how-to advice about researching "unknown" heroes and sharing their stories with the general public. PDF documents accompany this lecture and are available for download at https://www.rodgerstavern.com/past-lectures.
So find your favorite spot, a cool beverage of your choice, and enjoy!
